In February 2019, Professor LeBaron and colleagues presented research findings from the Global Business of Forced Labour research project to business leaders from across the UK tea industry at the House of Lords. The event was hosted by Baroness Lola Young, who has a strong interest in issues around modern slavery in global supply chains. She has promoted legislation to enhance transparency in supply chains.

The event involved a presentation of report findings by Professor LeBaron followed by a confidential discussion among industry leaders regarding the challenges being faced regarding forced labour. The participants spoke frankly about how the industry can collaborate, and considered the need to move beyond social auditing and certification in order to better enforce and promote workers’ rights in their supply chains.
